Berrien Community Foundation (BCF) is proud to announce the launch of the Wood Family Summer Arts Scholarship, a new opportunity to support high school students in Berrien County who are passionate about the arts.
Two scholarships of up to $1,500 each will be awarded to help students attend summer camps, intensives or programs that explore an artistic discipline at such places as Interlochen, Drum Corps International, Western Michigan University’s Seminar or other similar programs. One scholarship will be awarded to a student attending any high school in Berrien County, while the second scholarship will give preference to a student from Lakeshore High School.
“Our family’s participation in music goes back several generations to my grandpa Archie, who entertained Great Lakes cruise ship passengers in the 1930s,” said Doug Wood. “My wife Jill and I believe that arts education is critical to educational, social and personal growth and, with a little luck, builds a skill that can bring lifelong joy to a student.”
Artistic disciplines that would be considered include but not limited to: instrumental and vocal music; dance; visual arts such as painting, sculpting and photography; and theater arts such as acting, directing and costume design.
“The Wood Family’s generous support ensures that young artists in our community have access to enriching summer programs that help them grow creatively,” said Lisa Cripps-Downey, BCF president. “This scholarship is an exciting new opportunity to encourage students to pursue their artistic passions.”
The application deadline is March 15, 2025. Students can apply online at www.berriencommunity.org/WoodFamilyArtsScholarship.
