2024 Grants Awarded to Area Agencies by the Heart of Cook

The Heart of Cook has awarded grants to 24 area nonprofit organizations, totaling $75,00 at a grant reception at Indiana Michigan Power’s Cook Nuclear Plant on September 26. The Heart of Cook is a corporate-advised fund held by Berrien Community Foundation.

“These nonprofits provide much needed assistance to so many people across our service territory in Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana,” said AEP Executive Vice President & Chief Nuclear Officer Shane Lies. “We are proud to offer The Heart of Cook Grant program so nonprofits can get financial support to continue doing great work that makes life better for those they serve.”

The 2024 Heart of Cook grants will support a wide range of programming with everything from supporting home maintenance projects for low-income families to music scholarships to providing operational cost assistance of several nonprofits. The Heart of Cook focuses on programs that address education, human services and environmental projects, and gives priority to programs that involve a Cook Nuclear Plant employee.

While the Heart of Cook grant program is administered by Berrien Community Foundation, a committee comprised of Cook Nuclear Plant employees review all grant applications and make the decisions. After receiving dozens of applications, the Heart of Cook Grant Committee certainly had its work cut out for them in the decision making process.
