The Wood Family’s participation in music goes back several generations to Doug’s grandpa Archie, who entertained Great Lakes cruise ship passengers in the 1930s. Jill and Doug believe that arts education is critical to educational, social and personal growth and, with a little luck, builds a skill that can bring lifelong joy to the student.
The Wood Family Summer Arts Scholarship will provide financial support for students entering 9th through 12th grade in the upcoming school year to experience summer camps, intensives or programs that explore an artistic discipline at such places as Interlochen, Drum Corps International, American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive, Western Michigan University Seminar and Art Institute of Chicago Early College Summer Institute.
Applications are due March 15, 2025.
Two scholarships of up to $1,500 each are available.
One scholarship will be awarded to a student attending any school in Berrien County. The second will give preference to a Lakeshore High School student. For particularly expensive/prestigious programs, both scholarships may be awarded to one individual. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to their chosen art form as well as demonstrate financial need.
Artistic disciplines that would be considered include, but are not limited to:
- Instrumental and vocal music
- Dance
- Visual arts such as painting, sculpting and photography
- Theater arts such as acting, directing and costume design.
